About Me

Irene Korol Scala
Irene Scala is a typophile and graduate of The Cooper Union, where she studied with Paul Rand, Lou Dorfsman, and Milton Glaser. After postgraduate study at Jerusalem's "Bezalel Academy of Art and Design" she returned to NYC to join Jakdesign, creating a wide array of print and web communication pieces. Close to a decade ago, Scala teamed up with James Craig in teaching "Typography 1: Introduction to Typography" at The Cooper Union. Together, they Craig created the web site www.DesigningWithType.com, an online resource devoted to the art and appreciation of typography. The site offers a unique typographic resource showcasing talent from all over the world. Irene Scala continues to collaborate with Craig and co-authored and redesigned the Fifth Edition of his classic textbook Designing with Type: The Essential Guide to Typography. As an online companion to the new edition, they created www.DesigningWithType.com/5 to provide additional information beyond the scope of the book. Recently, Irene joined Spark451, a marketing and communications firm, in the role of Creative Director. She continues to direct, consult, and lecture in the fields of design, typography, and education.
